Flowroute-i™ is our own, proven, flood modelling software. First developed with scientists at Cambridge University in the UK, it’s an exceptionally flexible, powerful, accurate and easy-to-use modelling platform.

Flowroute-i was designed specifically to simulate river and floodplain dynamics in complex urban and rural areas, as well as mountainous regions. The technology models the complex interaction of pluvial (surface), fluvial (river) and tidal water sources, considering drainage, infiltration and groundwater levels.

Simulating outflows and flood defences

We use Flowroute-i to enhance our national and local flood models, which we regularly update with data from real flood events. We can also model what might happen if flood defences are breached, pipes burst or sewers overflow, and what could happen if water is pumped out of the area or escapes at a watershed point. This makes our modelling exceptionally flexible and realistic and gives our customers a far more precise and detailed understanding of the risks.

Accurate predictions of depth and velocity

Flowroute-i treats a floodplain as a grid of cells, with flow occurring between edge-connected cells at each time step. This offers an excellent dynamic picture of a flooding event, as well as highly accurate maximum depth and velocity at all points within the study area.

Rapid computing

We continually update Flowroute-i to reduce processing times and make the most of modern computing power. Today it can be run in a distributed or cloud computing environment, and simulate flood flows across hundreds of millions of cells.

The River Flood Module of Flowroute-i™ incorporates a coupled one-dimensional and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) hydrodynamic model. This is specifically designed to simulate river dynamics and floodplain inundation in complex, congested urban areas.

The coupling of a 1D river model with a 2D floodplain routing algorithm provides considerable added realism and accuracy compared to 2D routing algorithms alone.

Flowroute-i™ can simulate grids incorporating tens of millions of cells for dynamic flood events. It also uses high-quality sources of terrain information such as airborne LiDAR for routing flows around individual buildings.
